I guess when your business involves clear risks to your customers, you develop a proactive safety system. It will be interesting to see when the lab management community moves beyond surprise that there is risk to acknowledging and managing that list.
I'd like to think that. But even with general improvement in an industry, there will always be places that just don't Get It. Freefall Adventures, a parachuting outfit close enough to my house that we can hear canopies opening and the whoops of joy, has been killing people on a regular basis - by my count it's up to 12 fatalities in the past 12 years. And each time, they are jumping again within 1-2 hours out of "respect" for the deceased - it's what they would have wanted, the spokespeople always say; I'm sure it has nothing to do with lost profits by closing for a day or two to perform a safety assessment.
