I recall as an astronomy undergraduate in the late 60's we used a mercury filled basin as an artificial horizon for sextant sightings.

I hope some college art department doesn't see this and a performance art project worked out with mercury.
I have seen such a thing in real life. A 4 foot pool of liquid mercury on the floor as an art project. I left the room asap...
